Bentonite is used as a binder additive in the preparation of raw materials for metallurgical treatment – agglomeration of ore (concentrates), as well as for briquetting of polymetallic ores and waste of mining and metallurgical industries. Bentonite is most widely used for pelletizing of iron ore concentrates in the manufacture of pellets for blast furnace process and metallization.

«Bentonite of Khakassia» Ltd. manufactures the following products for ore mining and processing enterprises:

  • Crushed bentonite clay is produced by method of crushing of high-quality natural bentonite clay and manufactured in accordance with the requirements of TU 2164-004-01424676-2014 with the following characteristics:

Moisture content, not more than % 25
Swelling, not less than 3
  • Activated bentonite clay is bentonite clay activated with soda ash, which is produced in accordance with the requirements of TU 2164-001-49215611-2004 and has the following quality indicators:
Moisture content, not more than % 25
Effective viscosity, not less than (mPa*s) 30
Swelling index, not less than (ml/2g) 28
  • Bentonite powder for chromite pellets is a product of drying and fine grinding of the activated bentonite clay, preserving the original physical and chemical properties. This is manufactured in accordance with the requirements of TU 2164-004-49215611-2006 and has the following quality indicators:
Swelling index, not less than  мл/2г 25
Moisture content, not more than % 10
Saturation factor, not less than (times) 6
Residue on the sieve #071, not more than  % 30
  • Interpolymer binder (IPB) is an innovative development of «Bentonite of Khakassia» Ltd., which has no analogues in Russian market. This is a polymer complex (a combination of two or more polymers with different degrees of hydrolysis and molecular weight subjected to mechanical activation) with addition of inorganic components, which has a positive effect on the process of pelletizing and pellet quality. This is used as a binder for the production of iron ore pellets alone or in combination with bentonite clay. The specialness of the IPB is that this binder adjusts the granular composition of iron ore pellets in the direction of the maximum distillate of usable fraction and contributes to strengthening of the fired pellets at their optimal porosity.

Depending on the viscosity characteristics the IPB is manufactured in three grades: a low-viscosity IPB (IPB -LV), medium viscosity IPB (IPB-MV), high viscosity IPB (IPB-HV).

IPB is manufactured in accordance with the requirements of TU 2164-008-49215611-2009 and has the following quality indicators:

Visual form Powder of gray color, depending on the mineral composition may be of brownish color
Moisture content, not more than 9
Residue on the sieve #071 % 30
Effective viscosity, 1% of suspension (mPa*s) IPB-LV – from 5 to 10; IPB-MV – from 10 to 20; IPB-HV – more than 20
